This morning I got my hair dyed. Certainly not the first time in China and on its own not very blog worthy, however today was a little different. Since my usual salon was closed (lots of places near the university are closed) I went to the other salon on our street. As I mentioned before I’ve had my hair dyed before lots in the US and lots here in China too; until today I’d never had my hair washed BEFORE getting it dyed. Today was a first and it makes sense to wash out any and all product in your hair so that the dye comes in direct contact with your natural hair. We are led to believe that hair color will only work on dry hair and as thick as mine is, it wasn’t going to dry before they put the color in. However I am trying to live life in China like a ‘leaf in the wind.’ For the most part the process was the same save the washing before the coloring.
The staff at the salon was eager to cut my hair and made cutting motions with their hands in the air with my hair. I don’t want my hair cut. I’m trying to let it grow out. The down side is that since it is so hot and humid here in the summer my only alternative is to keep my hair in braids. Bangs might look great in my apartment but the minute I leave my hair becomes a frizzy mess. I am looking forward to cooler less humid temps this fall.
I will keep you posted on how well my hair does with washing before color.
