Today started out like any other day here in China. Chuck got up to go to work and Nate and I slept until around 8 this morning. When we got up we had breakfast and then he got started on his school work and I wrote on my computer after folding the dry clothes from yesterday’s laundry and rotating the still damp clothes to different places in the house to dry. Things got different when Chuck came back from teaching. Chuck went down and plugged my e-bike/scooter to the electricity so that it could be charged up and we all rode our bikes over to KFC for lunch. We all tried a dish that we hadn’t tried yet, meatballs and tomato sauce. Yes I know this is something that you might expect to get in an Italian bistro but KFC has this dish. It tasted as good as it looked too! With that of course we had to have French fries so we had a world meal if you will, Americans eating Italian style food at KFC in China. After lunch we went up stairs to Vanguard for some little items that we were in need of around the house and I got a long awaited for skirt. Now I have three to wear this summer with tights, pantyhose or leggings. We also needed to get some soy sauce, we go through that like it is water these days; a big change from our house in Georgia where a bottle of soy sauce would last us for a month or two easy.
We then came back to the house/apartment and got ready to go on our adventure for the day. We traded in our bikes for the scooters and were off in the direction or RT Mart past 2 7 square. Chuck had some business to do out in that area and after he completed his business we stopped at Grand Shanghai City Mall. We had dinner at Subway there. The mall is a large one with both inside and outside spaces, on the second floor was the food court with lots of Chinese restaurants and lots of things transplanted from the states there like Pizza Hut, KFC, and Subway. While in Subway we saw another foreigner. He lives near the school and has been here in China for about 16 months. After we ate and saw everything on the second floor we then went down to the first floor but that was all clothes and most of it was women’s clothes. Chuck was less than impressed and wanted to leave quickly we did and by that time it was 6pm and everyone in Zhengzhou seemed to be out on the road trying to get home tonight.
The drive home tonight reminded me of driving in many US cities when work is over, gridlock, but the one thing that was different was that there were scooters and bikes all over the place and in some places it seemed like there were more non cars than cars on the road. I felt like I had become a more Chinese style of driver on my scooter. I blew my horn and was very aggressive. I was unsure as to where we were so I really wanted to keep up with Chuck and Nate and not get lost. Several times I thought that I was going to have a fender bender with another scooter or bike but all worked out. Since we got home and my focus has been to get my blog for the day done and then to get the pictures up on my website. Here they are enjoy!
