Happy Mother’s Day! And yes, the Chinese also celebrate Mother’s Day it is here in China too. After giving me earrings and a necklace Chuck and Nate took me out to lunch. We went to a braised noodle restaurant and had a wonderful meal and they had tables set outside so that is where we sat. We ordered something that we think is braised noodles 红烧面条 hongshao miantiao. If this was braised noodles then we have learned something, this dish is very popular and we have eaten it in three different establishments and there is one more that I want to try. We also tried something that was wrapped in what looked like a large grape leaf and it was steamed. It seemed to be a type of meatloaf with couscous and pork. As always we had broccoli my favorite vegetable. After we finished lunch we were all in need of ice cream, we got flaming lips after eating the braised noodles. We rode further down Songshan Lu 嵩山路 past Zhongyuan Zhonglu until we got to another Popland. The Popland that we went to before was the Saturday that we went to the bookstore near Zhengzhou University 郑州大学. We all ordered something different and enjoyed our desserts.
On our way over on the scooter I may have discovered why having larger American eyes aren’t an asset all the time. Riding on the scooter I have not found a way to avoid the wind blowing debris into my eyes, I have a helmet with a face shield and glasses, I get just as much dust and dirt in my eyes with them as without them. Today I just had my glasses on and I got dirt (most likely from construction) in my eye and we fortunately stopped for ice cream next door to a pharmacy so after we ate I went in and got some eye drops, not a bad purchase since I am almost out of mine from the states. The eye drops soothed my eyes and they are pretty and pink too! On our way home we stopped by a store and got this amazing candy that I got a few days ago that Nate loves. The outside is made of milk candy and the center is a jellied filling that is sweet but not overly sweet.
We rode home after all of this adventure and the afternoon was nice, I just wish my husband had been able to not reply to his texts and spend the time with us as a family. Even when we are home eating dinner he is answering text messages. I have taken to answering messages while we eat too and I’m sorry, meal time should be a time for us to connect as a family, not for me to glare at my clueless husband. Really, today the day set aside to honor mother’s you think he could have spent the time with us and present not answering his cell phone messages. Those aren’t in your face the people you are with are.
I’m off my soapbox now.
